What are the common retinal diseases?

Macular Degeneration: This condition primarily affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Commonly seen in elderly age group (ARMD) and can lead to blindness if not treated early.

Diabetic Retinopathy: People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, which results from damage to the blood vessels in the retina. It can lead to vision impairment and blindness if left untreated.

Retinal Vascular Occlusion: This condition involves the blockage of blood vessels in the retina, leading to reduced blood flow and subsequent vision loss.

Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR): CSR is characterized by fluid accumulation under the retina, often in the central macular area. It can cause distorted or blurred vision.

Retinitis Pigmentosa: a group of genetic disorders that cause the breakdown and loss of cells in the retina, leading to a gradual loss of vision. Symptoms often begin in childhood and progress over time.

Retinal Detachment: occurs when the retina pulls away from the underlying tissue. It can lead to a sudden onset of floaters, flashes of light, and a curtain-like shadow in the field of vision. Retinal detachment is a medical emergency requiring prompt attention.

Retinoschisis: This is a condition where the layers of the retina separate, usually occurring in the peripheral part of the retina. It can be congenital or develop later in life.

Macular Hole: A macular hole is a small break in the macula, that leads to a decrease in central vision. It often occurs as a result of aging

Retinoblastoma: This is a rare cancer of the eye that usually affects young children. It originates in the retina and can be hereditary

How do I recognize a retinal disease?

Some common symptoms that indicate retinal conditions:

  1. Flashes of light, especially in side vision
  2. Blurry and distorted vision
  3. Small dark spots or lines in the vision
  4. Loss of peripheral vision
  5. Sudden loss of vision
  6. Eye pain and redness
  7. Halos around lights
  8. Photopsia ( flashing lights in vision)
  9. Reduce color perception

Treatment available

Early detection is of paramount importance when it comes to retinal diseases as they tend worsen with time. We offer effective early diagnosis for all retinal diseases and various treatment modalities such as:

  1. Intravitreal Injections: Medications, such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) drugs, can be injected into the vitreous humor to treat conditions like ARMD and diabetic macular edema. These drugs help reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage. We offer a large variety of anti-VEGF injectables for various cases like Avastin®, Lucentis®, Eylea®, as well as dexamethasone implant.
  2. Laser Therapy We offer laser photocoagulation is a technique used to seal or destroy abnormal blood vessels in the retina. It is commonly employed in treating diabetic retinopathy and other conditions that involve abnormal blood vessel growth. This is a quick, painless, non-invasive procedure to stop the progression of these diseases.
